Characterization and Assessment of Barriers and Facilitators to the Decision-Making Process for Blood and Blood Donor Safety in the United States: A Collective Case Study

Dissertation Committee Chair: Marcia A. Firmani, PhD, MSPH, MT(ASCP)MBCM

July 28th, 2022, 12-2pm ET

The US blood system is made up of federal, advisory, blood center, standards setting, and hospital decision-making teams that are each responsible for different aspects of managing blood and blood donor safety. There is no overarching decision-making framework or national blood policy used by all decision-makers in the US, which has resulted in a fragmented and often siloed system. This dissertation is a collective case study aimed at characterizing the current US blood system in terms of decision-making methods and to assess barriers and facilitators to those processes. The results from this study will guide improvements to the decision-making process for blood and blood donor safety among all stakeholder groups within the US blood system.
