Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives on Evidence-Based Practice in the Healthcare Setting: A Qualitative Study

Dissertation Committee Chair: Shelley B. Brundage, PhD, CCC-SLP

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is required in the roles and responsibilities of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). However, since the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association introduced EBP in 2004, only a handful of studies have explored primarily school-based SLPs’ knowledge, skills, barriers, and facilitators to EBP in clinical settings. Surprisingly, SLPs in healthcare settings were the minority or absent in these studies, thus suggesting that the discipline lags behind other healthcare disciplines such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing. This phenomenological study has identified how SLPs in healthcare 1) defined and described their use of EBP, 2) perceived barriers and facilitators to utilizing EBP, 3) modeled and taught EBP in clinical supervision, and 4) perceived barriers and facilitators to clinical supervision in healthcare settings.
